The skills and habits needed to be successful in business mimic the skills and habits needed to be successful in life.
The entrepreneurial journey not only leads to a profitable business. In many ways, it also leads to a profitable life.
Here are five ways entrepreneurship is the best personal development tool on the planet.
- Entrepreneurship forces you to clarify what you want. Knowing what you want is a key to success in any endeavor. If you don’t know what you want, how can you design your daily activities so you can get what you want? Entrepreneurship forces you to narrow your options to the one(s) that are most likely to result in the life you want to live.
The ability to clarify exactly what you want is a valuable skill. Entrepreneurship teaches it to us … quickly. - Entrepreneurship forces you to identify what you must do to get what you want. When we know exactly what we want, we can say NO to every activity that doesn’t lead us there. This makes leading a life and a business easier and more predictable.
Participate only in activities that lead you in the direction you want to go. Skip everything else. - Entrepreneurship forces you to track your progress. What we measure, we can also improve.
A business will remain stagnant unless we measure progress and use that data to inform future actions. If something you did led to good results, tracking it will help you repeat the success — or not repeat the failure. - Entrepreneurship forces you to improve and/or change course. If a business is not growing, it is dying. If a person is not growing, she is dying. Growth requires improvement. It requires us to change course from time to time in order to remain relevant and innovative. As you develop the habit of improving and changing course in your business, you will become more adept at doing it in your personal life.
- Entrepreneurship forces you to rinse and repeat for consistent success. Making a habit of the above actions will result in the creation of systems and rituals that will ultimately generate repeat success.
Systems and habits are the opposite of chaos. Together, they make our businesses run smoothly and more predictably. The same is true in our lives. Once systems and habits are installed, everything runs more fluidly and with less effort. Results are easier to attain, chaos is minimized, and life and business unfold at a more relaxed pace.
