Happy Independence Day?

I woke up this morning, feeling uneasy. That is nothing new. For most of my life, I have awakened on the morning of the 4th of July feeling unsure about exactly what I am expected to celebrate on this date. Of course I know about the Declaration of Independence and freedom from tyranny and all of the things I was taught in school. And of course, it has always been fun to “take off” work and school on the 4th of July.
.
Through the years, it’s been pretty easy to conform to the expectations of others, wish everyone a “happy 4th of July,” host a barbecue, throw back a few cold ones, and call it a day.
.
This year is different. I feel the need to dive deeper, and grapple with some of the emotions that have been previously marginalized.
.
I am feeling some kind of way this year. In the best way I know how to articulate it, this is what I mean.
.
I feel conflicted.
.
I feel uncertain.
.
I feel fearful.
.
I feel hopeful.
.

Being who I am is sometimes scary. I grew up not thinking very much of myself for various reasons.
.
I never quite fit in anywhere, and for many years, I thought I needed to be connected to a man in order to validate myself.
.
It was always so important that someone else, preferably, a man, saw value in me.
.
This approach to life got me into a lot of negative situations, both by myself and in various relationships.
.
I wish I could say I have fully healed, but the truth is this: I have not.
.
But I am moving in that direction. Through it all, as I mature, I am taking on the cloak of a new appreciation for myself.
.
Just me. There are some very important men in my life, but they do not define me as they once did.
.
I define me, and my definition is always evolving. I can never quite completely figure myself out.
.
I am a mystery, even to myself.
.
I like it that way. It keeps things interesting.

Waltzing into summer like ... . My family and I ha

Waltzing into summer like ...
.
My family and I have taken a trip to Hilton Head Island every summer for years.
.
This is the first year we have done so without our beloved son and brother. Due to the pandemic, he has not had a formal football practice for months. Last week, things started moving again and a tournament was announced. Also, he had some opportunities to work out in small groups with friends.

We want him to have the freedom to pursue his passion, so we made the decision to make the trip without him so he could do so.
.
It is scary for us to be here without him, but it has truly been a special kind of torture for a 16-year old young man to be cooped up at home for three months with his mother.
.
So we decided to relax and allow him maximum chances to be as prepared as possible to pursue his dream of playing football this season — however that season may look.
.
So it’s just me and my newly minted graduate hanging out with my baby daddy @dbjdigital at the beach.
.
We miss you Brooks, and we trust you are staying safe and behaving like the fine young man we know you are.
